Forget everything you knew about proper nutrition.

My patients are ready to talk for hours about the benefits or harms of various products, to tell how their mother was helped by the Dukan diet, and that Malakhov, in his program, advised to drink urine infusion on celery to get rid of all illnesses at once. They confidently say that now they are armed with knowledge on the most nowhere and will immediately improve their health in the next two weeks: they will lose weight, normalize pressure, sugar and lipid profile. Just think, you just have to: abandon salt, sugar, fat, fried, flour, coffee, tea and alcohol.

Forget everything you knew about proper nutrition.

Of course, these fiery enthusiasts quickly become disillusioned. Their weight remains the same, their illnesses are still with them. And the patients themselves continue to search for the magic supertablet, which will help solve the problem of back pain without having to get up from the couch, and eliminate the complications of diabetes without controlling blood sugar.

Why is it that the patient understands everything, but does nothing?

A person very quickly discovers that knowing everything about a healthy lifestyle is one thing, and following these rules is another. The patient's enthusiasm ends at the first stressful episode, when negative emotions overflow. Some people do not have any other skill in regulating their mental state than to eat half the cake in the evening after work. The body can not be under stress for a long time, it is sharpened to reduce the level of cortisol in the blood at any cost.

Therefore, when a patient faces a choice - to get rid of stress now or continue to live in anxiety, anger and sadness for the sake of some visionary perspectives like weight loss and normalization of cholesterol, the choice is obvious. Hi, cake, long time no see

That is why so few of our patients are making some radical changes in their lifestyle. Only a powerful motivation, as well as the availability of free time and money (you need to work with a psychotherapist, look for a suitable sport by trial and error, gradually change your diet, learn to work through your negative emotions without food) to help change things for the better. But the acceptance of the fact "I will have to work a lot over my new life" is very difficult for people who are used to passively wait from medicine for ready-made recipes for acquiring health. Those who understand that rescuing drowning people is the work of drowning people themselves are more motivated, which means they are more likely to find the strength and means to improve their health.

Unconditional confidence that there is absolutely useful and undoubtedly harmful food, only students of the medical university have. Practicing doctors are much more cautious: they are aware that "all poison and all medicine", and the matter is exclusively in dose.

Previously, people in white coats inspired that the level of cholesterol directly depends on how many times a person has sinned with butter, bacon and lamb skewers. And if the patient ingests only low-fat cottage cheese and milk, and once a month he allows himself a piece of turkey steamed without a drop of oil, his blood cholesterol is sure to be normal, and the risks of heart attacks and strokes are low. With this knowledge, the doctor begins his practice, confident that there is nothing easier than to make the patient healthy: he just needs to go on a diet.

But practice shows unexpected observations that contradict the axioms that the doctor learned. The doctor constantly sees patients who have breakfast with fried potatoes, have lunch with pork borsch, and have supper with bacon in chocolate. Moreover, their blood cholesterol is normal. Other patients, some of them - very young, are engaged in fitness and sit on proper nutrition, where nothing can be fattier than 0% of milk, and at the same time the analysis of their blood over and over again shows excess cholesterol. Let us make an amendment to the fact that many patients lie, and they especially inspire lying about their diet: every second will certainly tell that he eats only two leaves of lettuce, a spoonful of low-fat cottage cheese and half an apple per day. And yet the statistics turns out to be amazing: some really make great efforts to keep themselves on a strict diet, but there is no result.

Studies show that blood cholesterol does not depend only on nutrition. There are lucky beggars, from whom he is always normal, despite the regular sin of gluttony. Others, on the contrary, were unlucky: a bad lipid profile was programmed in their genes, and no chicken breast and irrigation with low-fat kefir three times a day would help here. And then the most interesting begins: it turns out that low-fat products not only do not bring any particular benefit, but also are capable of harm. Those who decide to replace dairy products of normal fat content with fat-free ones risk in the future to catch a stroke much more than those who allow themselves to moderate the usual cottage cheese and milk. It is assumed that the reason for such a misunderstanding in the industrial technology of degreasing, which turns a good product into something that our body has not learned to absorb normally.

Among ordinary people, something is happening now that is close to insanity on the theme of proper nutrition. Every day in the Facebook feed I see incriminating posts about the dangers of sugar and wheat.

Bun with poppy seeds does not pass the digestive tract, like all other decent products, and remains there forever, hiding in the folds of the large intestine. Coffee with milk is doomed forever kukovat in the stomach. Sugar causes addiction akin to narcotic. Poke, infidels!

And a whole sheet of emotional comments under each of these publications: usually an improvised confessional is spontaneously formed there, where those who googi berries and who have embarked on the true path without gluten, sugar, animal protein and GMOs, write off; they also make five minutes of hate for apostates.

Doctors at this time quietly watching what is happening, without showing much zeal to replace the two cubes of sugar in their tea with a bag of sweetener, do not think to give up oatmeal, despite the fact that it has a substance similar in chemical structure to gluten, and fearlessly ordering a pizza directly to their residency if they suddenly had to stay at work.

My colleague, a cardiologist, told me how much she loved butter. Half a kingdom for a slice of baguette with real butter, devoid of herbal supplements, for your morning coffee! She knows everything about cholesterol and the Mediterranean diet - that is what her patients with cardiovascular risks should follow, according to modern recommendations of the cardiological community. However, this does not prevent her from falling into religious fanaticism in relation to animal fats. She looks flawless, her lipid profile and weight are normal, and most importantly - she is satisfied with every minute of her life, because it does not waste time on exhausting struggle with itself and on dreams of an oil cream, a hot croissant with butter, a toast with butter and jam and so on.

Where does such suspicious calmness in people in white coats come from?

When thousands of different stories, tragic and amusing, pass before your eyes, you inevitably begin to relate to life in a philosophical way.

I can name at least one condition in which junk food proves to be beneficial. This is a depression. Fatty and sweet helps relieve anxiety and drown out sadness. Many patients with depression and do not suspect that they are sick, they just think that the world around broke - became gray, hopeless and bleak. And food becomes a tool that helps at least for a while to find peace and cope with anxiety. Some depressed patients find that alcohol and other personality-damaging things help them. And the consequences of alcohol abuse are much more difficult to treat than the “romance” with baking. Everything in this world is relative: probably, it is still better to abuse frivolous evenings with french fries than vodka in half with an energy drink.Although it is better to stop abusing altogether and to treat depression - with the participation of a specialist.

Doctors often see patients who have to follow a diet for health reasons. Intolerance to gluten is real, not invented by the authors gloss. And in this case, it does not look at all like it is painted in articles about gluten-free diets, when age-related skin changes, chronic fatigue and other problems are at once attributed to the effect of this “enemy” protein.

When a person really does not tolerate gluten, health problems are much more serious. It's not up to reading articles from magazines about yoga and vegetarianism. A patient with an exacerbation of chronic pancreatitis is also not up to glamorous dietary delights: the stomach hurts so that it fit the wall to climb. Eat something from the forbidden list of foods - it will get worse, and you can even die. Patients with myasthenia gravis, stroke, brain tumors, or multiple sclerosis often have problems with swallowing, and they can only eat a homogeneous liquid meal. This means that their menu for a while (or for life) is limited to cereals, wiped soups and baby food.

After talking with people who have not left their choice in food, you especially clearly understand the happiness of trying exactly what you want at the moment.

Life is transient and full of surprises. That is why doctors often can see a funny combination of vitality and cynicism. They saw thousands of stories when a person’s life was cut short or changed for the worse due to an unexpected illness. Today, someone drinks a disgusting taste, but a very useful smoothie made from green leaves and avocado, and tomorrow he will be diagnosed with a cerebral hemorrhage: coma, surgery, life of semi-vegetable. Not everything is possible to foresee, and this lousy smoothie may simply increase the chances of dying healthy — from a cause that could not have been foreseen. Fanatical adherence to the rules of healthy lifestyles is not a guarantee that a person will not have to remain imprisoned in his body with deep disability. Still, human fate is much more intricate calorie tables.

Sport in pleasure, simple and tasty food, mastering the skill to manage your emotions and reduce stress - this is the cherished formula of high quality of life. It is not necessary to be fixed on milligrams of salt or sugar in food, to follow the glycemic index manic or to look for traces of gluten in low-fat yogurt zealously

It takes a lot of effort, time and distracts attention from the life that is happening here and now. Taking care of one's health is not limited to a salt-free diet or the abandonment of animal protein. To seriously improve the quality of life and reduce the risks of disease, much will have to change. And the first thing to do is to learn how to enjoy the process of change, and not the thoughts of a distant result.
